pelikula: in praise of filipino cinema

From its initial conception as a product of a post-colonial heritage, Philippine cinema has evolved into the principal form of entertainment available to the masses: from those on the fringes of an ever increasingly urbanized society to the indigenous villagers scattered throughout the islands; Philippine cinema, as a vehicle for socially-conscious national artists, provides a voice for the underrepresented - contrary to the critical consensus that it is nothing more than wish-fulfillment, the "cinema of intent".

The principal aim of this community is to create a network of people willing to discuss Philippine film using a variety of different approaches, with the overarching goal of appreciating a long-standing , but thoroughly underrated, national cinema industry.
